History. Founded in 1868 when William E. Rogers, Albert Molitor, Frederick Denny Larke and John Raymond arrived to survey and log the area. The post office opened in 1870 as Rogers' Mills, was renamed several times, and became Rogers City in 1872; the town incorporated as a village in 1877 and a city in 1944. The Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company was organized in 1910 and began quarry production in 1912 after buying about 5,000 acres south of town. On Nov. 15, 1958, the limestone freighter SS Carl D. Bradley sank in a Lake Michigan storm; 33 of 35 crew died, 23 of them from Rogers City, its home port. Quarry ownership passed from founders to Carl D. Bradley and U.S. Steel (1920), to sole U.S. Steel ownership after Bradley's 1928 death, and today to Belgian company Carmeuse Lime and Stone.
Local economy. The Calcite quarry, the world's largest open-pit limestone quarry, dominates the local economy; it measures about 4 miles by 1.5 miles across roughly 8,924 acres. The Port of Calcite is one of the largest shipping ports on the Great Lakes, loading limestone onto lake freighters for steelmaking and other industries. The quarry has operated for more than a century (since 1912) and has shipped well over 750 million tonnes of product. Carmeuse Lime and Stone currently owns and operates the quarry and plant, the town's defining employer.
Culture and community. The Nautical City Festival, held the first full week of August (running for more than four decades), is the signature community event. The festival's Sailors' Memorial honors Great Lakes mariners, with special remembrance for the men lost aboard the Carl D. Bradley in 1958. Rogers City hosts two salmon fishing tournaments on Lake Huron, including the Fat Hogs Fishing Frenzie on Labor Day. The Murals on Main Art Festival takes place in mid-June, and the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival draws crowds in mid-October. During the Nautical City Festival, the Calcite quarry opens for public tours and a giant-equipment display.
What makes Rogers City distinct. Rogers City sits beside the largest limestone quarry on Earth, a pit big enough to be seen from far offshore. The 1958 Carl D. Bradley disaster struck one small town extraordinarily hard: 23 of the 33 men who died lived in Rogers City. To mark the quarry's centennial, master potter Guy Adamec of the Flint Institute of Arts created a large outdoor-tile mural for a town landmark. Both the quarry and its port are named "Calcite" after the principal mineral in limestone.
