History. The community was originally called Churchill and sat about half a mile from its present site; Hiram Hodge, its first resident, built a hotel and later left. The Rose family came from New York State in 1875, and Allan S. Rose partnered with M.H. French in the 'French and Rose Land Company.' On July 23, 1892, the settlement was moved east and the post office was renamed Rose City in honor of the Rose family. Rose City was incorporated as a fourth-class city in 1905. In the early morning of April 3, 1910, a fire raged through the commercial district and roughly 30 buildings burned down within about an hour, effectively ending the town's lumber era as many businesses never rebuilt. In 2002, the city and the site of its historic fire were designated Michigan State Historic Sites, with a double-sided historic marker erected in Rose City Park.
Local economy. The original economy was built on lumbering, cutting the giant pine and old-growth timber of the surrounding forests; an 1889 saw-and-shingle mill could cut about 20,000 feet of lumber and 25,000 shingles per day. After the lumber collapse and the 1910 fire, tourism and outdoor recreation became the economic backbone, with resorts and recreation businesses. Snowmobiling is a major seasonal driver, supported by the local Ogemaw Hills Snowmobile Club and extensive trail networks. The population has steadily declined (721 in 2000, 653 in 2010, 577 in 2020), reflecting its identity as a small resort-country town.
Culture and community. Snowmobiling and winter sports are central to local culture, drawing riders to the region's trail systems. In October 1962, Rose City's school district merged with neighboring West Branch to form West Branch-Rose City Area Schools.
