Web Design for Roswell, Georgia

Roswell is an affluent Fulton County suburb on the north bank of the Chattahoochee River, born as a 19th-century cotton-mill town founded by coastal planter Roswell King and now one of metro Atlanta's largest cities. Its walkable historic district, antebellum mansions, and the ruins of Roswell Mill draw visitors, while the Georgia 400 corridor makes it part of Atlanta's high-tech and healthcare economy. It carries a poignant Civil War story: Union troops burned its mills and deported the mostly female workforce north by train.

AppWT works with Roswell, GA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Roswell

Also known as. The City that Cotton Built. Enchanted Land (the Cherokee name for the area along the Chattahoochee).

History. In 1830, coastal Georgia planter Roswell King traveled through the area and saw potential for a cotton mill along Vickery Creek; he returned to build the Roswell Manufacturing Company, which became the largest cotton mill in north Georgia. King brought dozens of enslaved Africans, including skilled carpenters, whose Geechee/Gullah coastal culture came with them to north Georgia. The city was chartered on February 16, 1854. During the Civil War (July 1864), Union forces under General Kenner Garrard, on Sherman's orders, burned the mills and had roughly 400 mill workers, mostly women, charged with treason and shipped north by rail. Bulloch Hall (built 1839) was the childhood home of Martha 'Mittie' Bulloch, mother of President Theodore Roosevelt; she married there in 1853. Originally part of Cobb County, Roswell was transferred to Fulton County effective May 9, 1932.

Local economy. Founded on cotton textiles; Roswell Mill produced cotton, wool, and flour and ran until it finally closed in 1975. Today the Georgia 400 corridor between Roswell and Atlanta is a recognized high-tech corridor. Major employers include Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Wellstar North Fulton Hospital, Harry's Farmers Market, and the City of Roswell. Industries span retail, technology, food services, wholesale trade, and healthcare; game studio Tripwire Interactive is headquartered locally. Population grew explosively from about 2,123 in 1950 to over 92,000 by 2020.

Culture and community. Historic Canton Street is the dining and nightlife heart of downtown, lined with restored 19th-century buildings housing chef-driven restaurants like Table & Main and 1920 Tavern. Roswell hosts what it bills as the largest Memorial Day ceremony in Georgia. Roswell Roots is a February festival celebrating Black history and culture. The Roswell Wine Festival is held the first Sunday in October, and the Roswell Criterium bicycle race runs in May. A July 4 Fireworks Extravaganza is a signature annual event. Notable people connected to Roswell include comedians Jeff Foxworthy and David Cross, actress Pauley Perrette, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, and baseball MVP Dale Murphy.

What makes Roswell distinct. Despite sharing a name, this Roswell has no connection to the 1947 UFO incident in Roswell, New Mexico. The Sherman-ordered deportation of Roswell's mill women in 1864 is one of the most unusual civilian episodes of the Civil War; many never returned. Enslaved workers brought to build the town carried coastal Geechee/Gullah language and traditions inland to the Georgia Piedmont. NFL star Demaryius Thomas, a Super Bowl 50 champion, was found dead at his Roswell home in 2021. The Cherokee, who called the area an 'Enchanted Land,' were removed after gold was discovered on their land in 1828.
