Web Design for Roy, Utah
Roy is a residential Weber County city on the west side of Interstate 15, born as a dry, sandy Mormon farming settlement and grown into a suburb of Ogden. Its identity is tied closely to neighboring Hill Air Force Base, the region's dominant employer, and to hometown Medal of Honor recipient George E. Wahlen. The city's calendar centers on its long-running Roy Days summer festival.

About Roy
Also known as. Sand Ridge (original settlement name). Bedroom community of Ogden.
History. Roy was settled in 1873 by William Evans Baker, his wife Esther Celestia Cole Baker, and their family, who recruited brothers-in-law Henry Field, Justin Grover, and Richard Jones to homestead the area. The dry, sandy tract was first known as Sand Ridge; early pioneers burned tamped sagebrush for fuel, fed livestock de-thorned cactus, and drew brackish water from a hand-dug 50-foot well. The settlement was renamed Roy in 1894 after Roy C. Peebles, the deceased young son of a local schoolteacher. The 20th century brought major federal installations to the area, reshaping Roy from farmland into a suburban community.
Local economy. Hill Air Force Base is the dominant employer for Roy and the surrounding area. The area historically hosted the Navy Supply Depot (now the Freeport Center) and the Defense Depot Ogden Utah. Modern Roy is largely a residential bedroom community with a comparatively small local business base. The Bank of Utah opened what is described as Utah's first branch bank in Roy in September 1953.
Culture and community. Roy Days, held the first week of August at Roy West Park, features a car show, golf tournament, 5K run, parade, and fireworks. City recreation centers on the Roy City Recreation Complex and the Roy Aquatic Center.
What makes Roy distinct. The city is named for Roy C. Peebles, a schoolteacher's young son who had died, rather than for any founder. George E. Wahlen, honored by a Roy city park, was a Navy hospital corpsman who earned the Medal of Honor at Iwo Jima, repeatedly refusing evacuation after being wounded to keep treating Marines. Notable natives include Jim McMahon, the quarterback who led the Chicago Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX; Olympic bobsled silver medalist Bill Schuffenhauer; fashion designer L'Wren Scott; and So You Think You Can Dance season 3 winner Sabra Johnson. Roy claims Utah's first branch bank, opened in 1953.
