Web Design for Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is Georgia's oldest city and its first planned one, laid out in 1733 around a grid of shaded public squares that still define its walkable historic core. A coastal port on the Savannah River, it pairs Southern Gothic atmosphere, oak-canopied streets, and a thriving art-school culture with one of North America's busiest container terminals. It is the seat of Chatham County and the birthplace of the Georgia colony.

About Savannah
Also known as. Hostess City of the South. America's First Planned City. The Forest City.
History. Founded February 12, 1733, when James Oglethorpe and his settlers landed at Yamacraw Bluff and were greeted by Tomochichi's Yamacraw people and traders John and Mary Musgrove. Named for the Savannah River, it was Britain's 13th colony and Georgia's first city, 55 years older than the state itself. Served as Georgia's colonial and early state capital until 1786. Oglethorpe's grid plan featured 24 original public squares, 22 of which still survive today.
Local economy. The Port of Savannah's Garden City Terminal is one of the largest and fastest-growing container terminals in North America. Gulfstream Aerospace, a leading maker of business jets since 1958, is headquartered in Savannah. Tourism is a pillar of the economy, drawn by the historic district and coastal setting. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is a major cultural and economic presence downtown.
Culture and community. Leopold's Ice Cream, founded in 1919 by Greek immigrant brothers, is famed for its tutti frutti flavor; lyricist Johnny Mercer swept its floors as a boy. Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room has served family-style Southern fare at communal tables since 1943. Signature local dishes include shrimp and grits, pralines, and peach cobbler. Savannah's St. Patrick's Day parade, dating to 1824, is among the largest in the United States. SCAD anchors the arts scene through events like the Sidewalk Arts Festival and the Telfair and SCAD museums.
What makes Savannah distinct. Savannah's downtown, with its 22 squares, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the U.S., designated in 1966. The Historic District allows open containers, so visitors can legally stroll with a drink in a to-go cup up to 16 ounces. Juliette Gordon Low founded the first American Girl Guides (later Girl Scouts) troop in Savannah on March 12, 1912. The 'Forest City' nickname comes from the abundant live oak trees that canopy the city.
