Sayreville is a Middlesex County borough on the Raritan River, best known as the hometown of rock star Jon Bon Jovi and as a onetime brick-making and gunpowder powerhouse. Its riverfront clay pits are one of the world's great sources of museum-quality amber, preserving insects from roughly 90 million years ago. Today the borough is remaking its industrial waterfront into the Riverton retail and residential district anchored by Bass Pro Shops.

About Sayreville
Also known as. Roundabout. Wood's Landing.
History. Early settlement was called 'Roundabout' for the river's bends and 'Wood's Landing' before the community was renamed in the 1860s for James R. Sayre Jr., a Newark businessman. Incorporated as a township on April 6, 1876 and reincorporated as a borough on April 29, 1919. The Sayre and Fisher Brick Company dominated the economy from the 1850s, scaling from 54 million bricks a year in 1878 to 178 million by 1913. DuPont opened gunpowder production in the area in 1898, later expanding into paints and photographic products. The T. A. Gillespie Shell Loading Plant explosion in October 1918 killed dozens and injured hundreds during World War I. National Lead operated major works in the borough, cementing its heavy-industry identity.
Local economy. Long defined by brick manufacturing, gunpowder, and lead/chemical works along the Raritan River. Now transitioning to retail, technology, and residential development, headlined by the Riverton redevelopment of former industrial land, anchored by a Bass Pro Shops. Its position in the New York metropolitan area supports commuter-driven residential growth.
Culture and community. The Starland Ballroom, a well-known regional concert venue, opened in December 2003. EPIC Church International, a megachurch reported to draw over 10,000 weekly attendees, was ranked among the largest congregations in America. The borough's musical legacy runs through Jon Bon Jovi and Skid Row guitarist Dave 'Snake' Sabo.
What makes Sayreville distinct. Sayreville's clay pits yield the oldest amber in the Americas with insect inclusions, preserving over a hundred species of insects and plants from about 90 million years ago when the area had a tropical climate; specimens have been studied by the American Museum of Natural History. The state of New Jersey's all-time record high temperature, 110 degrees Fahrenheit, was recorded in Sayreville's Runyon neighborhood on July 10, 1936. A single borough gave rise to Bon Jovi frontman Jon Bon Jovi, The West Wing and Psych actor Dule Hill, and Skid Row's Dave Sabo.
