Web Design for Schenectady, New York
Schenectady is a Mohawk River city whose name comes from a Mohawk word meaning 'beyond the pines,' and whose 20th-century fame came from electricity. Thomas Edison moved his machine works here in 1887, seeding what became General Electric, and the giant GE and American Locomotive plants earned the nickname 'The City that Lights and Hauls the World.' Its walkable Stockade district, restored Proctors Theatre, and Union College campus preserve deep colonial and industrial history, including the scars of the 1690 Schenectady massacre.

About Schenectady
Also known as. The Electric City. The City that Lights and Hauls the World. The Old Dorp.
History. The name derives from the Mohawk word 'skahnehtati,' meaning 'beyond the pines,' referring to the pine barrens between Mohawk settlements and the Hudson River. Dutch colonist Arendt van Corlaer settled the site on the Mohawk River in 1661. On February 8, 1690, during King William's War, a French and allied Indigenous raiding party carried out the Schenectady massacre, killing about 60 residents and taking captives. The Erie Canal, completed in the 1820s, turned Schenectady into a major transportation and manufacturing center. Thomas Edison relocated his Edison Machine Works to Schenectady in 1887; the 1892 merger that formed General Electric made it a company town.
Local economy. General Electric was headquartered in Schenectady from 1892 and made the city a world-leading industrial manufacturer; its population more than doubled to about 30,000 by 1900. The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) built locomotives here until the plant closed in 1969. The Golub Corporation, parent of the Price Chopper / Market 32 supermarket chain, is based in the city. GE scientists working in Schenectady won Nobel Prizes, including chemist Irving Langmuir (1932) and physicist Ivar Giaever (1973). Rivers Casino and Resort opened in 2017 as part of a major waterfront redevelopment.
Culture and community. Proctors, a restored 1926 vaudeville and movie palace, anchors the downtown arts scene and hosts touring Broadway shows. Union College, chartered in 1795 as one of the first nondenominational U.S. colleges, fields athletic teams known as the Dutchmen and won the 2014 NCAA men's hockey national title. The nearby Mohawk River drive-in Jumpin' Jack's, a beloved Capital Region institution since 1952, serves burgers and hosts summer fireworks just across the river in Scotia. Central Park's rose garden is a seasonal draw in a residential part of the city. Notable figures tied to the city include GE 'Wizard' engineer Charles Steinmetz, filmmaker John Sayles, and actor Mickey Rourke.
What makes Schenectady distinct. The GE plant holds ZIP code 12345, which receives thousands of letters to Santa each year. GE radio station WGY (1922) was one of the earliest commercial U.S. stations, its call letters standing for General Electric and Schenectady. GE produced some of America's first regular television broadcasts from the city in 1928. The old Dutch nickname 'The Old Dorp' (dorp meaning 'village') still nods to the city's 17th-century roots.
