Scottsdale is an affluent resort city in Maricopa County that markets itself as 'The West's Most Western Town,' blending cowboy-era Old Town storefronts with high-end spas, golf, and contemporary art galleries against the McDowell Mountains. It grew from a chaplain's 1888 desert homestead into a tourism and luxury-living magnet drawing millions of visitors a year. Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home Taliesin West and a busy Cactus League spring-training scene cement its national reputation.

About Scottsdale
Also known as. The West's Most Western Town (official motto).
History. In 1888, retired U.S. Army chaplain Winfield Scott put a deposit on 640 acres beside the newly built Arizona Canal to farm the Salt River Valley. The community was named for Scott in 1894 and grew slowly as an agricultural market town in the early 1900s. Motorola opened a plant near Scottsdale's western edge in 1950, launching a lasting high-technology industry. Scottsdale incorporated as a city in 1951 with about 2,000 residents and first mayor Malcolm White, who adopted the 'West's Most Western Town' motto. Frank Lloyd Wright bought 600 acres at the foot of the McDowell Mountains in 1937 to build Taliesin West, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Local economy. Tourism is the economic engine, employing a large share of the workforce and drawing millions of visitors annually to roughly 15,000 hotel and resort rooms. Scottsdale had the highest number of destination spas per capita of any U.S. city (as of 2016), a wellness legacy dating to 19th-century health seekers. Strong sectors in luxury real estate, golf, high-end retail, healthcare, and technology (a lineage tracing back to Motorola). Old Town's galleries, restaurants, and nightlife are a major visitor draw and revenue source.
Culture and community. Cactus League spring training: the San Francisco Giants train at Scottsdale Stadium in Old Town, and the Diamondbacks and Rockies play at nearby Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Barrett-Jackson has run its world-famous collector-car auction in Scottsdale since 1971, now held at WestWorld each January. Parada del Sol, held since 1954, features what is billed as the world's largest horse-drawn parade, with 150+ entries. Rich Western and Native American art scene, with the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West, and a lively Old Town gallery district.
What makes Scottsdale distinct. The city literally trademarks its Old West identity while simultaneously ranking No. 1 in the U.S. for destination spas per capita -- cowboys and cucumber facials side by side. The Roald Amundsen railcar at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park carried a string of U.S. presidents and sits on the National Register. Salt River Fields, where two MLB teams hold spring training, sits on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land adjacent to the city. Winfield Scott, the founder, was an Army chaplain and farmer, not a soldier-of-fortune, and championed citrus growing in the valley.
