History. Founded in 1874 as a stop on the Pere Marquette Railway; its first name was "Mason Center" for its central location in Mason County. Renamed "Sweetland" after James Sweetland built a sawmill in 1878. Hiram Scott platted the land in 1882 and won the right to rename the settlement "Scottville" after winning a coin toss. Incorporated as a village in 1889 and as a city in 1907. Selected in 2007 for Michigan's Cool Cities Main Street program, receiving five years of downtown technical assistance. Population was 1,356 at the 2020 census, up from 1,214 in 2010.
Local economy. Small agricultural and retail trade center for eastern Mason County, sitting on the US-10/US-31 business route between Ludington and the farm country to the east. West Shore Community College, established in 1967 on about 360 acres of timberland near Scottville (at Stiles and Sugar Grove Roads), is a major regional education and employment anchor. Home base of the Mason County Central Schools district (K-12).
Culture and community. The Scottville Clown Band, founded 1903 and reorganized in 1947, is the town's defining cultural institution and a fixture at parades and festivals across Michigan, including the Ludington Coast Guard Festival. The Scottville Harvest Festival is a community fall celebration held downtown. Riverside Park on the Pere Marquette River and the Optimist Club hall are civic gathering spots that have been targets of local revitalization.
What makes Scottville distinct. The town's name was literally decided by a coin toss won by Hiram Scott in 1882. The all-volunteer Scottville Clown Band has provided more than half a million dollars in scholarships since the mid-1960s to send middle- and high-school students to summer music camps. Rock musician Maynard James Keenan, frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, moved to the Scottville area in eighth grade, lived on Darr Road in Custer Township, and graduated from Mason County Central High School; his father taught science and coached wrestling at nearby West Shore Community College.
