About Sierra Vista
Also known as. Hummingbird Capital of the United States. Hummingbird Capital of Arizona.
History. The surrounding area was inhabited by Paleo-Indians more than 11,000 years ago, alongside mammoths, horses, bison, and camels. Fort Huachuca was established in 1877 and became the constant engine of the area's economic and population growth. The city incorporated in 1956, with its name selected through a radio contest. Fort Huachuca was annexed by the city in 1971 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Ethel Berger became Arizona's first female mayor in Sierra Vista in 1973. At a 2006 ceremony for the city's 50th anniversary, contest namer 'Nola' was granted lighthearted 'clemency' for having misrepresented the original naming vote.
Local economy. Fort Huachuca, a U.S. Army post and intelligence/electronic-proving hub, is the largest employer in Cochise County and the primary economic driver. Roughly half of all jobs in Sierra Vista are government jobs. The city is the economic and commercial center of Cochise County. Wick Communications is headquartered in Sierra Vista and publishes dozens of newspapers across twelve states.
Culture and community. As the Hummingbird Capital, the region hosts as many as 15 hummingbird species, including beryline and violet-crowned hummingbirds. The Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival (August) and Spring Fling (May) are internationally known birding events. Other signature events include the Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering and the Festival of the Southwest. The area's dark skies make it an amateur-astronomy hub, with more than a dozen well-equipped private observatories.
What makes Sierra Vista distinct. Sierra Vista is credited as the site of the first McDonald's drive-thru, which opened in 1975 to serve Fort Huachuca soldiers who could not leave their vehicles while in fatigues. The city's name was chosen by radio contest, and the original vote later became a running joke resolved with mock 'clemency' in 2006. Its sky-island canyons pack a remarkable 15 hummingbird species into a single high-desert region. Dark skies have turned the town into a magnet for backyard astronomers and private observatories.
