History. The area was originally home to Potawatomi people; in 1833 Jay R. Monroe received a land patent for 65 acres along the Lake Michigan shore. Permanent settlement came in the 1850s with sawmills established on the Black River; timber was shipped by steamboat to Chicago and Milwaukee. South Haven was incorporated as a village in 1869 and as a city in 1902. Around the early 1900s the town boomed as a resort with theaters, a casino, an opera house, an amusement park, and lakeside resorts served by passenger steamboats.
