Web Design for St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis rises where the Missouri River pours into the Mississippi, a French fur-trading post that became the launch pad for America's westward expansion and is crowned today by the soaring stainless-steel Gateway Arch. Once the fourth-largest city in the country, it blends riverboat-era grandeur with a fiercely local culture of toasted ravioli, Provel-topped pizza, red-clad Cardinals fans, and the birthplace sounds of ragtime and rock and roll.

AppWT works with St. Louis, MO businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About St. Louis

Also known as. Gateway to the West. Gateway City. Mound City. Rome of the West.

History. Founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclede Liguest and his teenage scout Auguste Chouteau as a fur-trading post, chosen for high ground near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Named for King Louis IX of France; the region was later called Mound City for the large Native American earthwork mounds built by the Mississippian culture within the city's boundaries. Served as the staging ground for Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition and decades of pioneers, traders, and explorers heading into the frontier. By the 1890s St. Louis had grown to the fourth-largest city in the United States on the strength of river trade, rail, and manufacturing. Hosted the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (World's Fair) and the 1904 Summer Olympics, the first Olympic Games held in the United States.

Local economy. Anheuser-Busch, whose predecessor brewery opened in 1852, still brews Budweiser in St. Louis and anchors the city's brewing identity. Major present-day sectors include health care, finance and banking, telecommunications, airline operations, and education. Manufacturing remains significant, with products including beer, chemicals, metal products, and military aircraft (Boeing Defense builds fighter jets in the metro area). Home to Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and homegrown firms such as Enterprise Rent-A-Car, founded in St. Louis in 1957.

Culture and community. Toasted ravioli, a breaded and fried pasta pocket served with marinara, is a St. Louis original claimed as a local invention. St. Louis-style pizza features a cracker-thin, yeast-free crust topped with Provel, a low-melting processed blend of cheddar, provolone, and Swiss. Gooey butter cake, a rich dessert that originated in the 1930s, remains a beloved regional specialty. The St. Louis Cardinals, founded in 1882, have won 11 World Series titles; the NHL's Blues won the 2019 Stanley Cup. Ragtime pioneer Scott Joplin and rock and roll founder Chuck Berry both lived and created in St. Louis, shaping American music.

What makes St. Louis distinct. The 630-foot Gateway Arch is both 630 feet wide and 630 feet tall, and is the tallest man-made monument in the United States. Forest Park is larger than Manhattan's Central Park. The 1904 World's Fair is widely credited with popularizing the ice cream cone and iced tea to a mass American audience. Soulard Mardi Gras is one of the largest Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States outside New Orleans.
