Web Design for Stamford, Connecticut
Stamford is Connecticut's second-largest city and Fairfield County's corporate powerhouse, sitting on Long Island Sound about 34 miles from Manhattan. Once the 'Lock City' built on the Yale & Towne lock works, it reinvented itself in the 1960s-70s as headquarters for Fortune 500 companies fleeing New York, giving it the largest financial district in the metro area outside NYC. A dense downtown of glass towers sits minutes from Long Island Sound beaches and the quirky 'Fish Church.'
AppWT works with Stamford, CT businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.
About Stamford
Also known as. The Lock City (former home of Yale & Towne Lock Manufacturing). The City That Works. The Corporate City. Innovating Since 1641 (official motto).
History. Stamford was founded in 1641 by 28 pioneers from Wethersfield near Hartford and named after its English counterpart in 1642. By 1920 (population about 40,067) it was known as the 'Lock City,' home of the Yale and Towne Lock Manufacturing Company, a manufacturing anchor for the city. In the 1960s and 1970s a massive urban-redevelopment campaign, coupled with corporations relocating from New York City, transformed downtown with tall office buildings. Stamford is now Connecticut's second-most-populous city (behind Bridgeport) and the largest in the Western Connecticut Planning Region.
Local economy. As of 2023 Stamford is home to eight Fortune 500 companies and one of the nation's largest concentrations of corporations. Major employers and corporate presences include Charter Communications, Philip Morris International, Synchrony Financial, Gartner, Indeed.com, WWE, and NBC Sports Group. It has the largest financial district in the New York metropolitan region outside New York City itself. The Harbor Point redevelopment on the South End added waterfront housing, dining, and offices to the corporate core.
Culture and community. The Alive@Five summer concert series draws large downtown crowds. The Palace Theatre, a restored 1927 vaudeville house reopened in 1983, and the Avon Theatre Film Center (independent cinema) anchor the performing-arts scene. The Stamford Museum & Nature Center holds works by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, who was a Stamford resident. Long Island Sound waterfront life centers on Cove Island Park, an 83-acre park with beaches and a wildlife sanctuary.
What makes Stamford distinct. Stamford is the only U.S. city from which you can cross the border into the same neighboring state (New York) by traveling due north, due east, due south, and due west. The First Presbyterian Church is literally built in the shape of a fish, earning it the nickname the 'Fish Church.' Gutzon Borglum sculpted parts of the Mount Rushmore vision while living in Stamford, and his work is displayed at the local nature center. The 'Lock City' nickname is literal: the Yale & Towne padlock and lock empire was headquartered and manufactured here.
