History. Platted in 1871 by John D. Standish, who owned all the land in the vicinity and built the town's first business, a sawmill. The plat was first recorded as 'Granton,' but the name was changed back to Standish at the next legislative session. The Jackson and Lansing railroad (later Michigan Central) reached the area in early 1871; the first passenger coach arrived attached to a construction train on July 4, 1871. A stone depot replaced the original wooden station in 1889. Incorporated as a village in 1893 under first president James E. Austin, then as a city in 1903 under first mayor H. Randall. Adopted its home-rule city charter on September 22, 1970; population was 1,458 at the 2020 census.
Local economy. Founded on the lumber and sawmill industry that drew early settlers to Arenac County's forests. Grew as a railroad hub connecting Bay City with points north toward Mackinaw City. Shifted toward agriculture and fishing as the timber ran out, becoming a small commercial center. The Standish Maximum Correctional Facility (open April 1990 to October 31, 2009) was a major local employer until state budget cuts closed it. The Saganing Eagles Landing Casino, owned by the Saginaw Chippewa tribe and opened December 31, 2007, is a nearby employer and tourism draw, expanded and renovated in 2019.
Culture and community. The Standish Historic Depot hosts the annual Depot Days festival and a summer concert series. A summer farmers market and an annual vintage car show run at the depot grounds.
