History. The county seat was moved here from Greenville in 1860 after a county-wide vote. The county board bought 40 acres from Fred Hall of Ionia and named the site "Fred" in his honor. Levi Camburn's family were the first settlers; Levi became the first postmaster on March 10, 1862. The town was renamed in 1863 for U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Platted in 1865, incorporated as a village in 1869, and as a city in 1881. It grew quickly into a booming lumber town during the late-19th-century timber era.
Local economy. Began as a lumber town during Michigan's white-pine boom. Today it functions largely as a government center, hosting the Montcalm County courthouse and county offices. Rooted in agriculture; Montcalm County is one of Michigan's major potato- and crop-farming regions. Home to Casair, Inc. (a regional internet/telecom company) and near Montcalm Community College, about seven miles away. Marketed as a low-cost, family-friendly community within an hour of Grand Rapids, Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, and Big Rapids.
