History. The first settlers, Judge John Sturgis and George Thurston, arrived on August 20, 1827. By local legend, the town was named after Mrs. John Sturgis, whose biscuits were sent to a surveying party and so impressed future governor Lewis Cass that he insisted the settlement carry the Sturgis name. Sturgis was incorporated as a village in 1855 and became a city in 1896. By 1884 it was a furniture-making center, with several furniture factories alongside lumber yards, planing mills, fruit-drying factories, and a patented churn manufacturer. The 'Electric City' era began when the city installed a 150-kilowatt AC generator in 1899, followed by the Sturgis Dam, which began operating on September 3, 1911 as one of Michigan's first municipally owned power dams.

Sturgis Fest, organized by the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and launched in its current form in 2012, is the signature community festival, with a kickoff dinner and a week of events and fireworks. Sturgis has maintained a sister-city partnership with Wiesloch, Germany, since 1966. The city has a sizable Hispanic and Latino community, about 27.8 percent of residents at the 2020 census, unusually large for a small Michigan town.
