Sumter is a mid-sized South Carolina city about 45 miles east of Columbia, built on cotton, railroads, and now anchored by nearby Shaw Air Force Base. It takes its name and 'Gamecock City' identity from Revolutionary War general Thomas Sumter, the 'Fighting Gamecock' who harassed British forces with guerrilla raids. Its crown jewel is Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the only U.S. public park home to all eight known swan species.

About Sumter
Also known as. The Gamecock City. King City of the East Midlands.
History. Named for General Thomas Sumter, the Revolutionary War partisan leader nicknamed the 'Fighting Gamecock.' Incorporated as Sumterville in 1845; the name was shortened to Sumter in 1855. Served as an important supply and railroad-repair center for the Confederacy during the Civil War, drawing Union raids. Shaw Air Force Base opened in 1941 to train pilots for World War II, named for Sumter native Ervin Shaw, a pilot killed over France in 1918. Designated a World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service on September 17, 2024.
Local economy. Shaw Air Force Base is the county's largest employer, home to the 20th Fighter Wing and headquarters for Ninth Air Force, with thousands of military and civilian personnel. A diversified manufacturing base spans frozen foods, tools, chemicals, medical supplies, and electronics. Continental Tire and Swiss chemical firm EMS-Chemie operate area plants; the region markets itself as one of the more economically balanced in the country. The Palmetto Pigeon Plant, founded in 1923, is a longtime producer of squab and specialty poultry. Agriculture rooted in cotton, tobacco, and timber remains part of the surrounding county economy.
Culture and community. The Iris Festival, held Memorial Day weekend since the 1940s, is one of South Carolina's longest-running festivals, centered on Swan Lake Iris Gardens. The Sumter Opera House, a landmark in the historic downtown, hosts concerts, pageants, and cultural events year-round. The Fantasy of Lights holiday display illuminates Swan Lake with more than one million lights. Baseball great Bobby Richardson, the New York Yankees second baseman and 1960 World Series MVP, is a lifelong Sumter fixture with a local youth ballpark named for him. NFL wide receiver and two-time Super Bowl champion Freddie Solomon (Dolphins and 49ers) was a Sumter native.
What makes Sumter distinct. Swan Lake's status as the only U.S. public garden with all eight swan species is a genuine national distinction. The gardens' iris display resulted partly from a happy accident: bulbs discarded there by a resident took root and flourished into the millions. Bobby Richardson remains the only player ever named World Series MVP while playing for the losing team (1960).
