History. Formally platted on November 28, 1836, by John H. Bowman at the river confluence; the name 'Three Rivers' was reportedly first suggested around 1828 by Molly McInterfer. In the 1830s settlers launched flatboats and rafts loaded with flour and goods down the St. Joseph River toward Lake Michigan and Chicago markets. Grew as a milling and manufacturing town, later diversifying as manufacturing shifted. On August 6, 2024, an EF2 tornado struck the north side of the city. On March 6, 2026, a significant tornado hit much of the city under a Particularly Dangerous Situation warning; the same supercell went on to produce the Union City tornado.
Local economy. Historically a manufacturing and light-industry center, with designated industrial parks. City economic strategy emphasizes diversification, riverside recreation, and tourism, guided by the Imagine 2040 plan. Downtown Development Authority, established in 1980, drives downtown revitalization through park redesigns, alley improvements, and event programming.
