About Tiffin
History. Tiffin originated with Fort Ball, a War of 1812 supply depot on the Sandusky River; Erastus Bowe built the Pan Yan Tavern and became the first permanent settler in 1817. Josiah Hedges bought the land in 1821 and platted the town, naming it for Edward Tiffin, Ohio's first governor; it became the Seneca County seat in 1822 and was incorporated by the Ohio Legislature on March 7, 1835. The Seneca County Courthouse was built in 1884-86 to a design by architect Elijah E. Myers, who also designed the Michigan, Texas, and Colorado state capitols.
Local economy. National Machinery LLC, a maker of cold- and warm-forming (forging) machinery, is headquartered in Tiffin. Ballreich Bros. has produced Ballreich's potato chips in Tiffin since 1920.
Culture and community. Heidelberg University, founded 1850, and Tiffin University, founded 1888, both operate in the city. The Ritz Theatre, opened December 20, 1928 as a downtown movie palace, is a restored performing-arts venue. The Tiffin Glass Museum on South Washington Street, opened in 1998, displays over 2,000 pieces of locally made Tiffin glass.
What makes Tiffin distinct. The United States Glass Company's Tiffin plant made 'Tiffin Glass' from 1889 until 1984, a heritage now preserved at the Tiffin Glass Museum. Ballreich's has marketed its rippled 'marcelled' potato chips from Tiffin since 1920. The 1928 Ritz Theatre was billed as Tiffin's 'quarter-million-dollar movie palace.'
