Toronto is Canada's largest city and financial capital, a glass-and-steel skyline crowned by the CN Tower on the shore of Lake Ontario. It is one of the most multicultural cities on Earth, with about half its residents born outside Canada and more than 160 languages spoken. From Bay Street trading floors to Caribana's streets and TIFF's red carpets, the city runs on money, migration, and culture.

About Toronto
Also known as. The Six / The 6ix. Hogtown. T.O. The Big Smoke.
History. Founded as the Town of York on August 27, 1793, by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe, who chose the site as a defensible capital for Upper Canada. Early settlers derisively called it 'Little York,' a cluster of log homes near the mouth of the Don River. During the War of 1812, American forces captured and plundered the town in the 1813 Battle of York, burning the parliament buildings. Incorporated as the City of Toronto on March 6, 1834; the name comes from a Mohawk-derived word often linked to 'where there are trees standing in water.' The Great Toronto Fire of 1904 destroyed more than 100 downtown buildings. On January 1, 1998, the province amalgamated six municipalities, Old Toronto, East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and York, into one city despite a referendum that opposed it more than 3 to 1.
Local economy. Canada's largest financial centre, with the headquarters of the country's five largest banks concentrated on and around Bay Street. Home to the Toronto Stock Exchange, which had become the country's largest exchange by 1934. A major hub for film and television production, earning the 'Hollywood North' label. Headquarters for Canada's major national broadcast networks and media outlets. A leading tech, digital media, and startup center within Canada. Cultural institutions draw over 26 million visitors each year.
Culture and community. About half of residents were born outside Canada, over 200 ethnic origins are represented, and more than 160 languages are spoken. The peameal bacon sandwich, cornmeal-crusted cured pork loin, is the closest thing to an official city dish, famously served at Carousel Bakery in St. Lawrence Market. Major pro teams: the Maple Leafs (NHL), Raptors (NBA), Blue Jays (MLB), and Toronto FC (MLS). Caribana, held each summer, is the largest Caribbean festival in North America, drawing more than a million people. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), founded in 1976, is one of the world's largest film festivals. Hosted WorldPride in 2014 and the Pan American Games in 2015.
What makes Toronto distinct. Toronto is the fourth-most populous city in North America, behind Mexico City, New York, and Los Angeles. The underground PATH network is one of the world's largest subterranean pedestrian systems, linking Union Station to offices, arenas, and shops. A vast ravine system, cut by the Humber, Don, and other rivers, threads green wilderness through the urban core. The Toronto Islands were a natural peninsula until a storm severed them from the mainland in 1858. The nickname 'The Six' is credited to local rapper Jimmy Prime and was popularized globally by Drake, referencing the 416 area code and the six amalgamated municipalities.
