History. Pioneer John Hursh and his family became the township's first settlers in 1854. Union Charter Township was formally organized on March 9, 1861, about a month before the first shots at Fort Sumter, and its name reflects its Civil War-era founding. The township originally covered 36 square miles and contained several early settlements. Isabella City, at E. River Road and S. Mission Road, was the first established community; it is now the neighborhood locals call 'Dogtown,' though its plat is still recorded with the county. The community of Longwood was absorbed into Mount Pleasant, and the settlement of South Mount Pleasant became a biological wildlife preserve for Central Michigan University. The city of Mount Pleasant was incorporated out of the township and is now almost entirely surrounded by it.

Local economy. The township serves as the suburban and commercial fringe of Mount Pleasant, with highway-oriented retail, shopping centers and residential subdivisions. It remains one of the more populous townships in Isabella County, though its population fell from 12,927 in 2010 to 11,699 in 2020. The surrounding Mount Pleasant area economy is anchored regionally by Central Michigan University and by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's Isabella Reservation and Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort nearby.

Culture and community. Community recreation centers on township parks such as McDonald Park, with baseball and softball fields, and Jameson Park, with a playground.
