History. Upper Darby separated from Darby Township in 1747 for administrative convenience, and its township boundary was formally established in 1786 by petition to the court. Some of Delaware County's earliest mills operated here, powered by local creeks. Industrialization grew the population from just over 800 in 1800 to nearly 5,000 by 1890, drawing an influx of European immigrants; Delaware County itself was created on September 26, 1789.
