About Walker
History. Organized as Walker Township on December 30, 1837, the second township established in Kent County; it originally covered all county land north of the Grand River. First settlers are generally credited as Samuel and Lydia White, who came to Kent County from Canada in early 1837. The original 1867 township hall was later annexed into Grand Rapids in 1959, part of the pressure that pushed residents toward cityhood. Incorporated as a city in 1962 (population about 11,000 at the time) specifically to prevent further annexation into Grand Rapids. Population was 25,132 at the 2020 census.
Local economy. Corporate headquarters of Meijer, the Midwest supercenter chain (2929 Walker Ave NW). Corporate headquarters of Bissell, the family-owned floor-care and cleaning-products company. Historic economic base included lumbering, orchards and vegetable farming, plus plaster and sand mining. Modern economy centers on retail corridors (Alpine Avenue, Standale), automotive-parts and furniture manufacturing, and commercial/warehouse development. Home to WZZM-13, the region's ABC television affiliate.
Culture and community. Divided into four neighborhood areas: Alpine, Northwest, Standale and South Walker. Walker Standale Summer Concert Series brings free outdoor concerts to Walker Community Park in summer months. Annual city events include a fall Pumpkin Bash and the December Walker Winterfest at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center. Walker Homestead hosts farm-to-table dinners, live music and seasonal celebrations. Formerly home to the DeltaPlex Arena, which hosted concerts, sports and the Grand Rapids Gold NBA G League team before closing.
What makes Walker distinct. Walker exists as a city mainly as a defensive move: residents incorporated in 1962 to block Grand Rapids from annexing more of the township. It maintains a sister-city relationship with Colac, in Victoria, Australia. In 1987 nursing-home workers Gwendolyn Graham and Catherine Wood committed a series of murders of elderly patients at Alpine Manor in Walker, one of Michigan's most notorious true-crime cases. In the late 1990s residents rejected a proposed shopping mall over worries about school truancy and gang activity, an unusual case of a suburb turning down big retail.
