History. Oliver Williams bought land in the area in 1818 and, with his family, started the first farm settlement in Oakland County along the banks of Silver Lake. In 1819, Alpheus Williams and Archibald Phillips settled where the Clinton River crossed the old Saginaw Trail (now Dixie Highway) and built the first house in Waterford Village on the river's north bank. Williams and Phillips built the first dam on the Clinton River and established the township's first sawmill. Waterford Township was officially organized in 1834 and was named for its abundance of lakes.

Local economy. Oakland County International Airport, a general-aviation hub, is located in the township. The township's tax base was significantly affected by the closures of Summit Place Mall and a General Motors facility.

Culture and community. Waterford Oaks County Park features a waterpark and the Waterford Oaks BMX bicycle motocross track. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area offers kayaking, hiking, camping, and an 11-mile mountain bike trail ranked among the top trails in the country.
