About West Branch
Also known as. Official motto: "Up North. Down Home.". Branded as "Victorian West Branch" for its restored Victorian-era downtown.
History. Originated as a Michigan Central Railroad station in 1875 as the line pushed northward. Named for its location near the west branch of the Rifle River, which flows to Saginaw Bay. Became Ogemaw County seat in 1876 after competing with nearby Ogemaw Springs; when the lumber-era Ogemaw Springs settlement faded, its settlers moved to West Branch. Incorporated as a village in 1885 and a city in 1905. "Ogemaw" derives from the Anishinaabe/Ojibwe word "ogimaa" meaning chief or speaker, associated with Chief Ogemakegato of the Saginaw band, principal speaker at the 1819 Saginaw Treaty.
Local economy. Tourism-driven; the Outlets at West Branch (a Tanger center) draw shoppers from across northern Michigan. MyMichigan Medical Center-West Branch is a key regional healthcare employer. West Branch-Rose City Area Schools and nearby Kirtland Community College serve the area. Snowmobiling, ORV/ATV and outdoor recreation fuel seasonal tourism, with the Ogemaw Hills area offering roughly 95 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.
Culture and community. Victorian Art Fair, held in Irons Park each August, reached its 45th year in 2025 and reinforces the city's Victorian-themed identity. Ogemaw County Fair (third week of August), Ogemaw County Winterfest (February), and a Summer Music Series in Irons Park. Restored century-old Victorian downtown with unique shops, a local cinema, and bowling alleys.
