Web Design for West New York, New Jersey

West New York is a densely packed town on the New Jersey Palisades directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan, famous as one of the most crowded square miles in America. A Cuban exodus after Castro's revolution reshaped it into a Hispanic cultural stronghold nicknamed "Havana on the Hudson," with Spanish spoken by a large majority of residents. Its spine, Bergenline Avenue, is the longest commercial avenue in New Jersey and a bustling immigrant shopping district known as the Miracle Mile.

AppWT works with West New York, NJ businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About West New York

Also known as. Havana on the Hudson. The Miracle Mile (for Bergenline Avenue). Embroidery Capital of the United States (as part of North Hudson).

History. The Lenni Lenape (known to Dutch settlers as the Hackensack and Tappan tribes) were the first known inhabitants. English explorer Henry Hudson, employed by the Dutch East India Company, reached the area in 1609. In 1658, Peter Stuyvesant purchased the North Hudson land from the Hackensack and Tappan peoples. The area was successively part of Bergen County and then North Bergen (1843) before separating. West New York was incorporated as a town on July 8, 1898, replacing Union Township after a referendum. Italian and German immigrants first populated the town, followed by a massive wave of Cuban refugees after the Castro revolution in the 1960s.

Local economy. Early 20th-century growth was driven by embroidery and textile manufacturing, making North Hudson the 'Embroidery Capital of the United States.' Bergenline Avenue is the state's longest commercial avenue, with more than 300 retail stores and restaurants. An Urban Enterprise Zone established in 1996 offers a reduced sales-tax rate to spur commerce. The redeveloped Hudson waterfront has shifted former industrial land toward residential and recreational use.

Culture and community. Strongly Hispanic and Cuban in identity; over 80% of residents speak a language other than English (predominantly Spanish) at home. The Cuban Day Parade of New Jersey marches up Bergenline Avenue in summer, passing through West New York. A Dominican-American Parade is also held on Bergenline Avenue. The 'Havana on the Hudson' identity infuses local restaurants, bakeries and shops along the Miracle Mile.

What makes West New York distinct. West New York was the second-most densely populated municipality in the United States among places over 50,000 people, behind only neighboring Union City (2010 census). The 2020 population was about 52,912 people packed into roughly one square mile of land. Heavyweight boxing champion James J. Braddock, the 'Cinderella Man,' lived in West New York for about ten years. Other notable people connected to the town include WWE wrestler AJ Lee, NHL defenseman Mathieu Schneider, and fashion designer Isabel Toledo.
