Web Design for Weymouth, Massachusetts
Weymouth is a South Shore town of Boston founded in 1622 as the Wessagusset Colony, making it the second-oldest European settlement in Massachusetts after Plymouth. Heavy Irish immigration from Boston neighborhoods during 1960s-70s urban renewal earned it the nickname 'Suburban Southie,' and today roughly a third of residents claim Irish ancestry. It pairs colonial history, the birthplace of First Lady Abigail Adams, with commuter-rail access to downtown Boston.

About Weymouth
Also known as. Suburban Southie. Southie on the South Shore.
History. Settled in August 1622 as the Wessagusset Colony, the second English trading colony in Massachusetts, coordinated by London merchant Thomas Weston with 50-60 ill-prepared colonists; the venture nearly collapsed and largely dissolved by March 1623. Surviving settlers were absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the community was formally incorporated and renamed Weymouth in 1635 after Weymouth in Dorset, England, following the arrival of about 100 English settlers. Home to a shoemaking industry from the early 1700s until 1973, when the Stetson Shoe Company closed. After roughly 365 years of town-meeting government, Weymouth adopted a mayor-council city form of government in 2000 while keeping the traditional name 'Town of Weymouth.' The former South Weymouth Naval Air Station closed in 1997 and is being redeveloped as the mixed-use Union Point.
Local economy. A commuter/bedroom suburb of Boston on the South Shore, served by MBTA commuter rail and bus for the trip into the city. Historically driven by shoemaking (through the 1973 Stetson Shoe closure), plus early fishing, farming, and iron works. South Shore Hospital, located in South Weymouth, is a major regional employer and health center. Redevelopment of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station as Union Point, a mixed-use community.
Culture and community. Strong Irish-American identity; Weymouth ranks among the highest Irish-ancestry populations in the United States at roughly 33 percent. Community events include Weymouth Farmers Market, summer concerts, and Food Truck Fridays. Notable natives and residents include First Lady Abigail Adams, abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman, and Oscar-nominated actor Hal Holbrook. Union Point's former naval-base grounds have served as a filming location for movies including Don't Look Up, Free Guy, Patriots Day, Madame Web, and the 2016 Ghostbusters.
What makes Weymouth distinct. Weymouth is one of the few places in the United States where self-service gas stations are illegal, a ban introduced in 1977. It is the second-oldest township in Massachusetts, tracing to the 1622 Wessagusset settlement. The Great Esker is a winding glacial ridge of sand and gravel formed roughly 12,000 years ago and is among the tallest eskers on the continent. Despite becoming a city government in 2000, it officially retains the name 'Town of Weymouth.'
