White Cloud is the small county seat of Newaygo County, sitting on the bank of the White River in west-central Michigan at an elevation of about 873 feet. It grew up as a lumber-era railroad junction where two former Pere Marquette lines crossed, and today it leans into outdoor recreation as an official 'Trail Town' on the 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail. With roughly 1,479 residents, it pairs a working county-government town with campgrounds, a mill pond, and a small municipal airport.

About White Cloud
Also known as. Trail Town (a Pure Michigan / North Country Trail Association designation). The county seat of Newaygo County.
History. The area saw little settlement before 1870; soon after, the growing lumber town became the seat of Newaygo County. White Cloud sat at the junction of two Pere Marquette railroad routes: the north-south Grand Rapids-to-Baldwin line crossed the southwest-northeast Muskegon-to-Big Rapids line here. The White River Railroad was incorporated on November 13, 1879, and on April 1, 1880 opened a 13-mile line running north from White Cloud to tap the White River area's timber. A widely repeated (but never firmly documented) local legend says the lumber town was renamed for a Native leader called Chief White Cloud; the Ojibwe name Waabaanakwad literally translates as 'White Cloud.' The county itself, Newaygo, is named either for an Ojibwe leader who signed the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw or from an Algonquian word meaning 'much water.'
Local economy. Major employers include Newaygo County government (White Cloud is the county seat), White Cloud Public Schools, and the North American Refractories Co. (NARCO) plant at 1301 East 8th Street, which makes heat-resistant refractory materials. A roughly $13 million Ceres Solutions Cooperative feed mill opened in April 2018, taking advantage of the town's airport proximity and Marquette Rail access. White Cloud Airport has a 2,917-foot runway, a terminal building added around 2019, and an adjacent industrial park. State highways M-20 (east-west) and M-37 (north-south) intersect at the city, tying it into the regional road network.
Culture and community. White Cloud is a designated North Country Trail Association 'Trail Town,' with the ~4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail reachable via a connector from the White Cloud Park and Campground. The two-day TrailTown Celebration is held at White Cloud County Park, centered on running, hiking, and paddling the White River. White Cloud SkyFest is a signature annual community-and-aviation festival tied to the local airport (for example, held June 20, 2026). The Purple Heart Pow Wow is an annual August event sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The White Cloud Community Library maintains a local-history and genealogy department for Newaygo County research.
What makes White Cloud distinct. The town's name comes from an undocumented frontier legend about a Native leader named White Cloud, so its true naming story has never been confirmed. White Cloud has a historic neighborhood known as 'Swedetown,' rooted in Swedish and Finnish immigrant settlers. Despite being a county seat, the whole city is under two square miles and grew only about 5 percent between the 2010 and 2020 censuses (to 1,479 residents). It doubles as an aviation town, holding an annual SkyFest and hosting a feed mill sited partly for its airport access.
