History. Platted around 1859 by lumber baron Charles Mears and Giles B. Slocum, who first named the settlement "Mears." Renamed Whitehall in 1862 by combining the surnames of early sawmill owners Charles Whitaker and Moses Hall. Grew as a strategic point for floating and distributing logs; incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1943. The name White Lake/White River traces to the Native American name Wabish-Sippe, meaning "the river with white clay in the water," noted after Jacques Marquette passed through in 1675. The city's population peaked at 3,017 in 1970 and was 2,909 at the 2020 census.

Local economy. Howmet Aerospace (formerly Alcoa) operates an aerospace-components manufacturing plant that is a major local employer. Michigan's Adventure, the state's largest amusement and water park, sits just south of the city and anchors area tourism. Summer tourism on White Lake and nearby Lake Michigan beaches supports seasonal lodging, dining and recreation. Culture and community. The White Lake Chamber Music Festival draws audiences the first week of August. The Howmet Playhouse (originally the Playhouse at White Lake), a 400-seat theater built in 1916, hosts live performances. The Cruz'in classic car show fills downtown with 400-plus vehicles on the last Friday of July. The Arts Council of White Lake, founded in 1985, sponsors summer concerts and artisan markets. Community traditions include a Memorial Day parade, a Fourth of July parade, a June arts-and-crafts festival and a December Christmas parade.

What makes Whitehall distinct. The area's World's Largest Weathervane (in neighboring Montague) is topped by a model of the Ella Ellenwood, a local schooner wrecked off Milwaukee in 1901 whose nameplate later drifted back across Lake Michigan to its home port of White Lake. In 1953, White River lighthouse keeper Frances Johnson appeared as a contestant on the TV show "What's My Line?" A city-approved graffiti art wall opened in July 2023 was painted over in March 2024, less than a year later. Whitehall was renamed for two competing sawmill owners, literally splicing Whitaker and Hall into one town name. Notable natives include Gold Glove MLB outfielder Nate McLouth and Ruth Thompson, the first woman to represent Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.
