About Windsor Charter Township
History. Windsor Township was organized on March 16, 1842, alongside Delta, Eaton Rapids, and Sunfield townships; John D. Skinner served as the first supervisor. It was considered remote and one of the last townships in Eaton County to be settled, despite 63 land purchases by 1836. Orange Towslee and Nathan Pray settled in the fall of 1837; Esek Pray, born March 1838, is considered the first white child born in the township, and Charlotte Towsley the first white girl in 1839. The Potawatomi kept a permanent camp along the Grand River before white settlement, and local residents deeded about 10 acres near the river to the local Native Americans. Isaac H. Dimond arrived in 1848 and built a dam on the Grand River; a grist mill was completed by 1856 and the village of Dimondale was platted, growing to seven shops by 1880. Dimondale incorporated as a village in 1906. Dimondale ran its own high school from 1929 to 1963 before merging into the Holt School District.
Local economy. Historically powered by milling on the Grand River dam, including a grist mill, sawmill, planing mill, and machine shops. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway arrived in 1878, spurring the village's growth. Now largely a residential and bedroom community for the Lansing metro area; the township spans seven school districts including Holt-Dimondale, Eaton Rapids, Grand Ledge, and Charlotte.
Culture and community. In the 1960s and 1970s the Dimondale area was a regionally and nationally recognized hotspot for championship horseshoe pitching. The Dimondale Horseshoe Club was founded in 1964.
What makes Windsor Charter Township distinct. The name Dimondale blends settler Isaac Dimond's surname with "dale." It was one of the very last townships in Eaton County to be settled despite dozens of early land purchases. Michigan's longest river, the Grand River, winds directly through the township and village.
