Windsor is Canada's southernmost major city, sitting across the Detroit River from Detroit and tied to it by the Ambassador Bridge and an underwater tunnel. Long the Automotive Capital of Canada, it builds Stellantis minivans and Ford engines while also carrying the softer nickname 'Rose City.' It is a gritty, warm-climate border town with deep Underground Railroad roots and one of Ontario's most diverse populations.

About Windsor
Also known as. Rose City / City of Roses. Automotive Capital of Canada. The Border City.
History. French settlers established farms here in 1749, making it the oldest continually inhabited European-founded settlement in Canada west of Montreal. Renamed Windsor in 1797 after the town in Berkshire, England; incorporated as a village in 1854, a town in 1858, and a city in 1892. A major terminus of the Underground Railroad, receiving many of the estimated 20,000 to 30,000 African-American refugees who reached Canada across the Detroit River; Sandwich First Baptist Church, built by refugees, is a National Historic Site. During the 1838 Battle of Windsor, a band of about 400 Americans and rebels crossed from Detroit and burned a steamboat and several buildings. In the 1920s, rum-running flourished across the river because Michigan enforced Prohibition while Ontario permitted alcohol. Hiram Walker & Sons founded its distillery here in 1858, giving rise to the Walkerville district.
Local economy. Known as the Automotive Capital of Canada, home to Stellantis Canada's minivan assembly plant, which employs roughly 3,500 workers. Ford Motor Company runs two engine plants in the area employing around 1,880 people. The Ambassador Bridge is the busiest commercial crossing on the Canada-US border, carrying about a quarter of the two countries' trade in goods. Caesars Windsor, opened in 1994 as Casino Windsor, employs about 2,100 people and anchors local tourism. The University of Windsor and St. Clair College are major institutional employers. Detroit-Windsor forms North America's most populous cross-border urban area, making trade and manufacturing the region's identity.
Culture and community. Windsor-style pizza is a distinct local specialty: thin crust made with cornmeal, shredded (not sliced) pepperoni, and high-fat cheese. Erie Street's 'Little Italy' and a thriving shawarma scene reflect the city's ethnic dining culture. The Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival long featured one of the world's largest fireworks displays, drawing over a million spectators across both riverfronts. Progressive rock band The Tea Party has been based in Windsor since forming there in 1990. Home to the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, Art Windsor-Essex, and the Windsor International Film Festival. One of Ontario's most diverse cities outside Greater Toronto, with about 27.7% of residents foreign-born.
What makes Windsor distinct. Windsor is the southernmost major city in Canada, sitting at a latitude comparable to northern California. Because of a bend in the border, Windsor lies geographically SOUTH of Detroit, so travelers cross south to enter Canada from the US, a rare reversal. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is the only existing underwater international vehicular border crossing between two countries. It holds the warmest climate of any Ontario city; the province's highest recorded humidex, 52.1?C, was measured in Windsor on June 20, 1953. The Rose City nickname was pushed by a 1960s civic campaign to soften Windsor's blue-collar image, complete with a rose-garden competition.
