About Wolverine Lake
History. Before 1918 Howard Stuart and L. A. Green proposed damming several small streams to create a larger lake. The village's own account credits the idea to Dr. Stuart, a local dentist and developer, while walking along the culvert that crossed the road where the dam now sits, in the spring of 1914. The dam project was completed in March 1923, and by the end of that year the growing community petitioned to be named Wolverine Lake. The lake was formed by flooding six small lakes surrounded by marsh: Spring, Mayze, Pork Barrel, Bicking, Taylor and Bradley. The name was chosen after the wolverine, the state animal. Wolverine Lake incorporated as a village in 1954.
Culture and community. The village holds an annual Corn Roast Festival, which reached its 37th year, and it is run largely on volunteers. Tiki Night Fireworks is a recurring village event funded in part by a public fireworks donation fund. The village runs a farmers market, and the Lakes Area Youth Assistance 'Taste of the Lakes' has run for 25 years in the community. Children are zoned to Walled Lake Consolidated Schools: Guest Elementary and Loon Lake Elementary serve parts of the village, middle schoolers split between James R. Geisler and Sarah Banks, and all of Wolverine Lake is zoned to Walled Lake Central High School.
What makes Wolverine Lake distinct. The village police department maintains a Marine Division and the village has a standing Water Management Board, which is unusual for a municipality of this size and follows directly from the fact that a quarter of its area is the lake. The lake is entirely man-made. Six separate small lakes and the marsh between them were flooded to create it, and the village took its name from the result rather than the other way round.
