About Wood-Lynne
History. Incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 19, 1901, from portions of Haddon Township. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1681; land owned by Mark Newbie was called Lynnewood after the linden trees, and the name was changed to Woodlynne in 1892 to avoid conflict with another municipality's name. Woodlynne Amusement Park, including Woodlynne Lake, operated from 1895 to 1914 on the former estate of Charles M. Cooper before a fire destroyed it; the Camden and Suburban Railway Company built housing on the site, leading to the borough's incorporation. In 1906 the City of Camden made an unsuccessful attempt to annex Woodlynne.
Local economy. Primarily a dense residential bedroom community with little commercial base; the Woodlynne Borough School District and its single Woodlynne Elementary School (pre-K through 8) are among the borough's main public institutions. Commuter access is provided by the nearby PATCO Ferry Avenue station and NJ Transit bus routes 400, 403, 450 and 453, linking residents to Camden and Philadelphia.
Culture and community. A borough war memorial honors residents who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The borough is ethnically diverse; in the 2010 census it had the highest percentage of Vietnamese residents (6.9%) of any New Jersey municipality, and by 2020 its population was about 44.5% Hispanic and 33.8% Black. Woodlynne Elementary School serves pre-K through 8th grade, and high-school students attend Collingswood High School in neighboring Collingswood.
What makes Wood-Lynne distinct. At roughly 0.22 square miles it is one of New Jersey's smallest municipalities (about the eighth-smallest by area) yet one of the most densely populated, at roughly 13,338 people per square mile, the highest density in Camden County. The town sits on the footprint of the former Woodlynne Amusement Park and the now-vanished Woodlynne Lake, which operated from 1895 to 1914. Woodlynne had the highest effective property tax rate in New Jersey, reported at 7.384% in 2020.
