History. First settled in 1824 and officially organized on March 7, 1834; named "York" because so many residents had emigrated from New York State (Othniel Gooding was the first township clerk). Grew to about 1,197 residents by Michigan statehood in 1837; early hamlets included Mooreville (the early trading/civic center), Saline (in the northwest corner) and settlements like Nora and Urania that grew around Toledo & Ann Arbor Railroad stations. When the railroad chose Milan over Mooreville in 1878, Milan's growth was assured, eclipsing Mooreville. Originally a full 36-square-mile survey township, it lost land as Saline incorporated portions in 1966 and Milan in 1967. 2020 population was 9,108.
Local economy. The Toyota Technical Center opened here after Michigan legislation permitted the sale of about 690 acres for research and development; the expanded R&D campus opened in 2008, making Toyota a marquee presence. Agriculture remains a core land use across the township's roughly 35 square miles. The Federal Correctional Institution, Milan (built 1933 within the township) is a significant federal employer. U.S. Route 23 runs north-south through the eastern part of the township, linking it to Ann Arbor and Toledo.
