History. A French-Canadian fur trader established a trading post on the site in 1809. Major Thomas Woodruff founded a permanent settlement, Woodruff's Grove, on the east bank of the Huron River in 1823. A separate community on the west bank was platted in 1825 and named Ypsilanti after Demetrios Ypsilantis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence; Woodruff's Grove took the Ypsilanti name in 1829 and the two merged. Depot Town, a second commercial district near the railroad, grew up in the late 1840s after the Ypsilanti train depot opened in 1838. Ford Motor Company built the mile-long Willow Run bomber plant in 1941; at peak it produced one B-24 Liberator per hour, making it the largest factory in the world under one roof. Kentucky and Appalachian workers migrated en masse to staff the wartime plants, and the women workers there gave rise to the Rosie the Riveter image (Rose Will Monroe, an actual riveter, worked at Willow Run).
Local economy. Eastern Michigan University, a public research university in the heart of the city, is the dominant institution and employer. The city was long home to General Motors' Hydramatic plant, which developed and produced the pioneering Hydramatic automatic transmission. The WWII Willow Run/Ford aircraft complex anchored mid-century industrial employment; part of the surviving plant now houses the Yankee Air Museum's Rosie the Riveter Home Front museum.
