The short version: test what AI tools say about you, fix the facts they get wrong, publish pages that answer buying questions, then test again in 30 days. Shoppers are already asking ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews what to buy this season, and requests for that kind of visibility keep climbing. The steps below are in order, so a small business that is starting late can still make real progress before December.
Why Start Now
On September 21, 2026, Fiverr published its 2026 Holiday Marketing Index. Among the freelance search specialists it surveyed, 67 percent reported rising retailer demand for generative engine optimization (GEO), compared with 56 percent for traditional search rankings. On the Fiverr marketplace, business demand for GEO services grew 29 percent between November 2025 and April 2026.
Timing is where most owners fall short. Among e-commerce specialists, 56 percent said businesses are not prepared for the holidays at all, and 50 percent of search specialists said businesses underestimate how long optimization takes. The survey also found that 28 percent of search specialists advise beginning three to four months before peak season.
By that standard, starting now is late. It is not useless, as long as you focus on fixes rather than a big new content project.
Demand moved this fast because shopping habits changed. A shopper used to type a few keywords and skim a list of links. Today that same shopper asks a complete question and gets back one combined answer naming just a few brands. Missing from that short list means missing from the decision entirely.
Step 1: Run a Five-Question Baseline Test
Write down the five questions your best customers ask before they buy. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. For every answer, note whether your business appears, which competitors do, and whether any detail about you is incorrect.
Save the results, because they become your baseline and cost nothing to create. Many owners skip this, but a problem you have never looked at is a problem you cannot fix.
Step 2: Correct Wrong Facts About Your Business
Fix the errors before you add anything new. If an AI tool lists the wrong hours, prices or service area, find where that detail lives on your own site and in your profiles, and correct it there first.
Six weeks is not enough time to build authority from nothing. It is enough time to clear away the errors that make an AI tool misdescribe your business or leave it out.
Step 3: Build One Clear Facts Page
Create a single page on your site that states the basics in plain sentences. It should cover how to buy, your hours, your service area, what you sell and who you sell to. AI systems tend to repeat details they can confirm quickly, so make this page easy to confirm.
Step 4: Move Prices and Policies Into Plain Text
Pricing and policy details belong where an AI tool can read them. Put starting prices, warranty terms, return windows and shipping cutoffs in crawlable text on the page. Keep them out of PDF files and images, where they are harder to read.
Step 5: Match Your Name, Address and Phone Across Directories
Make sure the name, address and phone number of your business read the same on your website, your Google Business Profile and the major directories. When those details conflict, an AI tool has good reason to treat you as a risky source to cite.
Step 6: Answer Buying Questions Directly
Each week, publish or rewrite one page that fully answers a real buying question. Give the answer first, in a sentence or two, and explain after that. Writing that is built to be quoted is the writing AI tools end up quoting.
Step 7: Add Last-Updated Dates to Main Pages
Show a last-updated date on each main commercial page, and make sure the date reflects a real update. A page that sits untouched gives up ground to newer pages covering the same topic.
Step 8: Confirm Your Site Is Fast and Crawlable
You do not need a secret formula for AI search. Google says that before a page can serve as a supporting link inside AI Overviews or AI Mode, it must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google also says AI features carry no extra technical requirements beyond that.
Google's own advice for these AI features looks a lot like a standard SEO checklist. Make important pages crawlable and indexable, write useful content, and use descriptive titles and headings. Link related pages clearly, give accurate business information, add helpful images or video, and keep the overall page experience strong.
Before the holidays, confirm that your site loads fast, can be crawled and reads well on a phone. GEO comes down to solid search basics plus writing that AI can quote without getting it wrong.
Step 9: Add Real Photos and Video
Real people on camera still matter this season. In the same survey, 69 percent of UGC freelancers said demand is rising for genuine creator videos posted to TikTok and Meta during the holidays.
Share photos of finished installs, before-and-after shots and short clips of real customers. This material persuades shoppers who doubt polished AI output, and it gives answer engines specific, verifiable evidence to cite.
Step 10: Re-Run the Test in 30 Days
After 30 days, ask the same five questions in the same four AI tools. Compare the new answers with your baseline to see whether you now appear, whether the wrong facts are gone and which competitors still show up.
For a local or regional business, small and steady work like this is what earns AI citations over time.
Keep Your SEO Program Running
Do not cut SEO to pay for GEO. In the Fiverr survey, 61 percent of search specialists still saw Google SEO as their top long-term investment, and the experts advised investing in both.
AI answers are built from pages that search engines have already indexed and learned to trust. Cutting SEO starves those answers of the material they need, so think of AI visibility as one more layer on top of your search work.
How to Read the Survey
This data comes from a vendor survey, so weigh it accordingly. The 230 respondents were top-rated Fiverr freelancers in search, UGC and e-commerce, working in eight countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. The survey ran before the 2026 holiday season. Answers were self-reported, and the results were not projected onto the general population.
Treat it as a signal about what clients are asking for, not as proof of how many sales AI search drives. Still, when real buyers ask for something this much more often, it shows where their attention is going, and that lines up with what owners report seeing in their own traffic.

What is GEO, and where does it fit in a holiday plan?
GEO, short for generative engine optimization, means making it simple for AI answer tools like Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT to find your business, understand it and cite it. In a holiday plan, that comes down to testing what those tools say now, fixing wrong facts and publishing pages they can quote.
Should this plan replace my SEO work?
No. In Fiverr's 2026 Holiday Marketing Index, 61 percent of search specialists still saw Google SEO as their top long-term investment, and the report advises doing both. Google also requires a page to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can serve as a supporting link inside AI Overviews or AI Mode.
How far ahead of the holidays should these steps start?
Ideally three to four months before peak season, which is what 28 percent of the surveyed search specialists recommend. Half also said businesses underestimate how long optimization takes. If you are starting later, focus on facts, pricing, hours and product pages instead of a large new content project.
