About the Harbour City
Sydney grew up around Port Jackson, better known as Sydney Harbour, a river valley cut into sandstone and later flooded by rising seas. The First Fleet's 11 ships arrived in January 1788, on land whose traditional owners along the southern shore of the harbour are the Gadigal.
Greater Sydney is very large: 658 suburbs and 33 local government areas spread over 12,369 square kilometers, while the City of Sydney council area covers only about 26. The population was estimated at 5,638,830 in June 2025, about two thirds of everyone in New South Wales.
Money sits at the center of the local economy. Financial and insurance services make up the largest share of the city's output, Sydney holds about half of Australia's finance sector, and the Australian Securities Exchange began operating in 1987.
Two structures define the skyline: the Harbour Bridge, whose steel arch was completed in 1932, and the Opera House, a World Heritage Site that opened in 1973. Seventy surf beaches line the coast.
Sydney at a glance
- Flaked pebbles in Western Sydney's gravel sediments might indicate occupation from 45,000 to 50,000 years ago, and radiocarbon dating shows human activity from around 30,000 years ago. Before British arrival there were 4,000 to 8,000 Aboriginal people in the greater Sydney region.
- Sydney Harbour, formally Port Jackson, a ria flooded by post-glacial sea level rise.
- The Opera House has staged over 100,000 performances and received 100 million visitors since opening in 1973, and is home to Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony.
- Greater Sydney covers the traditional lands of 28 known Aboriginal clans. Clan names in the region were often formed by adding the suffix -gal to a word for their territory, a place in it, a food source or a totem; the Gadigal, whose land runs along the southern shore of Port Jackson from South Head to Darling Harbour, are the traditional owners of the ground where the settlement was first established.
- The Australian Museum opened in 1827 to collect and display the natural wealth of the colony and remains Australia's oldest natural history museum; the Museum of Sydney opened in 1995 on the site of the first Government House.
- The Sydney Opera House, a World Heritage Site opened in 1973, for which its architect was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2003.
