About Hanford, California
Hanford is an agricultural city and the seat of Kings County in California's San Joaquin Valley. Born as a Southern Pacific Railroad town and named for a paymaster who reportedly handed out wages in gold, it grew a nationally famous Chinatown (China Alley) and a fine-dining legend, the Imperial Dynasty. It remains a farm-country hub surrounded by dairies, cotton, and one of the Navy's largest air stations.
History of Hanford
- Southern Pacific laid tracks through a sheep camp in 1877; the town was named for James Madison Hanford, a railroad paymaster remembered for paying workers in gold coins
- The Mussel Slough Tragedy of May 1880 - a deadly land-title gun battle between settlers and the Southern Pacific Railroad about 5.6 miles northwest of town - left seven men dead and became a symbol of railroad-monopoly conflict
- Incorporated as a city in 1891 (driven largely by the need for fire protection); its first census counted about 269 residents
