About Los Angeles, California
Sprawling across a sun-drenched coastal basin, Los Angeles is the global capital of film and television and the second-largest city in the United States. Born as a 44-person Spanish farming pueblo in 1781, it grew into a metropolis defined by Hollywood glamour, freeway culture, endless neighborhoods, and one of the busiest seaports on Earth. It is a place where the Hollywood Sign, palm-lined boulevards, and Pacific beaches share the same skyline.
History of Los Angeles
- Founded September 4, 1781 as El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles (Town of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels) by 44 settlers of Native American, African, and European heritage under Spanish governor Felipe de Neve.
- Established as a farming pueblo to supply the Spanish missions and presidios, with settlers damming the Los Angeles River and digging irrigation canals almost immediately.
- Passed from Spanish to Mexican rule, then to the United States after the Mexican-American War (1848); the original El Pueblo remains preserved as a historic monument, the symbolic birthplace of the city.
