About Oakland, California
Oakland grew from an oak-shaded East Bay townsite into the industrial and shipping muscle of the San Francisco Bay Area, its port among the busiest in the nation. It is a fiercely proud, multicultural city that birthed the Black Panther Party, the hyphy sound, and the Mai Tai, and long carried three major pro sports franchises. Even after those teams departed, 'The Town' keeps its own distinct identity across the bay from its more famous neighbor.
