About Coral Gables, Florida
Coral Gables is a meticulously planned Mediterranean Revival city just southwest of Miami, dreamed up in the 1920s by developer George Merrick as a jewel of the City Beautiful movement. Coral-rock plazas, banyan-lined boulevards, ornate entry gates, and a strict architectural code give it the feel of a Spanish town transplanted to South Florida. Today it blends old-money residential charm with a dense cluster of multinational corporate headquarters and the University of Miami.
History of Coral Gables
- Formally incorporated as a city on April 29, 1925, during the Florida land boom, as one of the first major planned communities in the United States.
- Founded and designed by real estate developer George E. Merrick (1886-1942), who modeled it on the City Beautiful movement and mandated Mediterranean Revival architecture throughout.
- Named after Merrick's family plantation home, built of local Miami limestone (coral rock) and coral-colored Ludowici roof tile.
