About Belvidere, Illinois

Belvidere is the county seat of Boone County and the only genuine city in this batch, straddling the Kishwaukee River in the far north of Illinois about twelve miles east of Rockford and inside the Rockford metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 25,339 people in 9,113 households and 9,609 housing units. It grew first on the north bank and then moved its commercial center across the water when the railroad arrived on the south side in 1851, which is why its downtown sits where it does today. The city is best known for two things that pull in opposite directions: a dense collection of public murals and listed historic architecture, including the only funerary building Frank Lloyd Wright saw built, and a tornado in 1967 that remains among the deadliest weather events ever to strike an American school.

History of Belvidere

• The land was long held by the Illinois Confederation, a loose grouping of perhaps twelve to fifteen tribes of which the Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Michigamea, Peoria and Tamaroa were principal, whose numbers fell sharply after contact with French traders, largely through introduced infectious disease. European American settlement dates to 1835 and to two men, Simon P. Doty and Daniel Hilton Whitney, who called their site beside the Kishwaukee 'Elysian Fields' after the Greek afterlife. Newcomers could neither pronounce nor spell it, and the place was renamed for Belvidere, Virginia, the former home of Ebenezer Polk, a railroad lawyer and principal financial backer. Building the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad south of the river in 1851 pulled the business district across to the south bank, where it has stayed. Industry followed the river and the rails, most durably the National Sewing Machine Company, which operated from 1886 into the 1940s. In 1906 Sarah Ames, a former sheriff, left for South Dakota and named her new settlement after the town she had come from; Belvidere, South Dakota, still exists as a town of 46 people in Jackson County. On April 21, 1967 an F4 tornado struck at the close of the school day, when children from the high school and from area grade schools were waiting outside Belvidere High School for their buses. Twelve of the sixteen buses standing there were overturned or thrown. Twenty-four people were killed, many of them schoolchildren, about 500 were injured and more than 100 homes were destroyed, with damage put at 22 million dollars. A memorial statue was raised in front of the high school in 2007, and as of 2013 the event ranked as the sixth worst weather disaster at an American school and the deadliest since 1955. Severe weather returned on March 31, 2023, when an EF1 tornado caused the Apollo Theatre to collapse during a concert, leaving one person dead and more than forty injured, at least four of them critically.

The Belvidere Economy

A Walmart cold storage project announced on June 20, 2023 covers more than 1.2 million square feet on 200 acres on the southwest side; it is projected to bring up to 700 jobs and was reported under construction as of May 2026 with a 2027 completion goal, which is a forecast rather than an accomplished fact. A fatal industrial accident on December 7, 2009 destroyed a manufacturing facility in the city when a large pressure vessel ruptured during a crystal-growing process, throwing debris weighing several tons over a wide area and killing a truck driver at a nearby truck stop. The Chemical Safety Board investigated and issued a final report in 2013 attributing the failure to stress corrosion cracking that had gone unnoticed inside one of the autoclaves. The facility was demolished in 2015 and not rebuilt.

Parks include Spencer Park, Belvidere Municipal Park and the Boone County Fairgrounds. Jeanne Gang, founder of Studio Gang and an internationally recognized architect, was born in the city, where her father served as the Boone County engineer, and graduated from Belvidere High School in 1982.
