About Bull Valley, Illinois
Bull Valley is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, in the outermost ring of the Chicago suburbs, with a 2020 census population of 1,128. It sits at an elevation of 942 feet at 42 degrees 19 minutes 10 seconds north, 88 degrees 22 minutes 21 seconds west, and is ringed by the larger exurb towns of Crystal Lake, Woodstock and McHenry. The village exists because of a thirty-five year campaign to keep the land rural: neighbors organized in 1942, half the area's owners voluntarily accepted three-acre zoning in 1955, and incorporation finally passed by referendum on July 23, 1977. Its government works out of the George Stickney House, an 1865 spiritualist residence built with no ninety-degree interior angles, and the village spreads across four townships, Nunda, McHenry, Greenwood and Dorr.
History of Bull Valley
- In 1942 a group of neighbors organized the Countryside Improvement Association. It gradually became involved in questions of land use.
- In 1955, in what the village's own history calls an unprecedented action, owners of about 3,000 acres, half the Bull Valley area at the time, voluntarily placed their land under three-acre zoning, the highest residential classification the county then offered. The village history credits this single decision with establishing the future character of the community.
- In 1960 residents raised money by subscription to pay for a land use study and professional planning advice, and the Eastern McHenry County Plan Association was formed to address problems common to four townships.
Landmarks and Places in Bull Valley
- The George Stickney House, also called the Stickney Mansion, built in 1865 by George and Sylvia Stickney and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Opening the house's own article corroborates the village article's statement that the village government occupies it: the house has served as the Bull Valley Police Headquarters since 1985 and is occupied by the Village of Bull Valley and its police department.
- The Stickneys chose an isolated site for quiet and for spiritualist activity, and both were said to be accomplished mediums who hosted seances in Sylvia's second-floor ballroom, which runs the entire length of the building. The house served as quarters for Federal soldiers during the Civil War and held the first piano in McHenry County.
- The Terwilliger House, an 1849 Greek Revival estate listed on the National Register on May 14, 1979. It is square and two-storey, built on a fieldstone foundation with locally produced soft red brick, with large Doric columns dominating the southern, eastern and northern facades, a hipped roof of slight pitch, and a central cupola large enough to serve as a bedroom. A kitchen extension was added at the rear in the 1890s.
The Bull Valley Economy
- The article publishes no employer list, no industry section and no commercial district for Bull Valley. Land use, not commerce, is the organizing subject of its history.
- What the article does document is a deliberate low-density land economy: three-acre voluntary zoning in 1955, a 1961 recommendation of five-acre minimum tracts, and a settlement pattern the article describes as woods, farms and low-density housing between larger towns.
- The census section also records that 0.8 percent of residents lived in urban areas and 99.2 percent in rural areas, an unusual split for a place inside the Chicago metropolitan area.
Community Life in Bull Valley
- The village article states that Bull Valley prides itself on its rural, low-density character, and cites the village's own history page along with two Chicago Tribune reports for that characterization.
- Two people with articles of their own are listed as connected to the village: Chester Gould, the cartoonist who created the Dick Tracy comic strip, and John H. Johnson, founder of the Johnson Publishing Company.
- The article's see-also section points to two comparable Illinois villages, Barrington Hills, described as also taking pride in a low-density rural character, and Wayne, a Kane and DuPage county village with similar demographics and a low-density rural equestrian setting next to a larger town.
