History of Carbondale

• Daniel Harmon Brush, John Asgill Conner and Dr. William Richart bought a 360-acre parcel in August 1853, sited between the two proposed railroad stations of Makanda and De Soto and between the two county seats of Murphysboro and Marion.
• Brush named the place for the large deposit of coal in the area.
• The first train reached Carbondale on Independence Day 1854, running north on the main line from Cairo.
