History of Crown Point

• Lake County was incorporated in February 1837 with Liverpool as county seat, and later that same year Solon Robinson funded a 500 dollar project to build a wooden county courthouse in Crown Point, after which it was designated county seat.
• Construction of a larger county courthouse and clock tower began in 1878. Its central portion including the clock tower was started in 1878 and dedicated in 1880 at a cost of 52,000 dollars, with the brick facade made of local bricks from the Henry Wise brickyard. The towers were added in 1907 and dedicated in 1909.

Landmarks and Places in Crown Point

• The Old Lake County Courthouse, known as the 'Grand Old Lady', standing in the center of town on the square. It contains gift shops, a record shop and a museum on the second floor.
• Lake County Sheriff's House and Jail, the building from which John Dillinger escaped in 1934, at 226 South Main Street.
• Crown Point Bridge, at the Lake County Fairgrounds. It was built by Archibald M. Kennedy & Sons in 1878 over the Little Flatrock River two miles south of Milroy, was displaced by highway improvements in 1933, and John Wheeler led the effort to dismantle, move and re-erect it at the fairgrounds.

The Crown Point Economy

• What it does record is transport and civic infrastructure rather than commerce.
• Gary Public Transportation Corporation provides bus service along the 93rd Avenue corridor.
• In 2017 the city explored a commuter bus service to Chicago comparable to the ChicaGo Dash that Valparaiso has run since 2008. These plans have not yet come to fruition.

Community Life in Crown Point

• A second nickname, the 'Marriage Mill', arose because Crown Point had no waiting period for marriage licences, making it a popular place for couples to marry.
• The Lake County Fair is held at the fairgrounds each year in early August for ten days, and features monster trucks, a demolition derby and an arena for horse shows.
