About Gary, Indiana
Gary is a Lake Michigan steel town in far northwest Indiana, built from scratch in 1906 by U.S. Steel and named for the corporation's founding chairman. Once a booming 'City of the Century' of nearly 180,000 people, it became a symbol of Rust Belt decline as the mills shed tens of thousands of jobs, leaving hauntingly beautiful ruins that draw filmmakers and urban explorers. It is also hallowed pop-culture ground as the birthplace of the Jackson family, and it produced America's first generation of Black big-city political power.
History of Gary
- Founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation as a planned company town, laid out as an adjunct to its massive Gary Works complex.
- Named after Elbert Henry Gary, the founding chairman of U.S. Steel.
- On October 4, 1919, a riot broke out on Broadway during the nationwide steel strike, and federal troops were sent in to restore order.
