About Gas City, Indiana

Gas City, first known as Harrisburg, became a boom town when natural gas was found in the area in 1887, during the Indiana gas boom.

Landmarks and Places in Gas City

  • Gas City Park. The town park, with ball diamonds, tennis and pickleball courts, playgrounds, a fishing pond and an outdoor swimming pool.
  • Cardinal Greenway. A rail-trail through Grant County for biking, hiking and jogging, with trailheads in Marion and Jonesboro.

The Gas City Economy

  • Gas City's economic story follows the natural gas boom, and its population climbed from 2,870 in 1920 to a peak of 6,370 in 1980.

Community Life in Gas City

  • The Ducktail Run Rod and Custom Car Show fills the town each autumn, known locally simply as the Ducktail Run and restricted to vehicles from 1972 and earlier. Education runs through the Mississinewa School Corporation, with Mississinewa High School, R.J. Baskett Middle School and Northview Elementary all inside the city, and the Gas City-Mill Township Public Library lends locally. Among those from the town are the virologist and epidemiologist Thomas Francis Jr., the oil entrepreneur William Skelly, whose career followed the same fuel that named the place, and baseball player Alta Little.
