More About West Terre Haute

Samuel McQuilkin laid out the town on November 22, 1836, and it was also known as Macksville or Maxville.

McQuilkin opened a general store on the National Road in 1834, between what are now Third and Fourth streets.

By 1878 the town had a lumber mill, a cigar factory and a shingle maker.

Local clay became building brick, paving brick, sewer pipe and drain tile at works such as the Vigo Clay Company and the Miller Brick Company.

The town keeps its own council and police, street, sewer and fire departments.

Students are zoned to Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary, West Vigo Middle and West Vigo High schools, and the town has a branch of the Vigo County Public Library.

It is the last Indiana community on westbound U.S. 40 before the Illinois line.
