About Audubon Park, Kentucky
History of Audubon Park
- The ground was hilly pastureland once held by Gen. William Preston, who received it in a 1774 grant from the British government as payment for service in the French and Indian War. G. Robert Hunt bought the tract in 1906, and the Audubon Park Country Club was built by the golfer Russell Houston. The Audubon Park Realty Co. acquired the land in 1912 and named the development for the wildlife painter John James Audubon. Building went slowly until Louisville Gas and Electric laid gas mains and set streetlights in the 1920s. An early streetcar spur ran to a station house near the middle of the park; service ended in the 1920s, though the rails were not entirely pulled up until 1975. The state assembly formally incorporated the city in 1941.
The Audubon Park Economy
- The city began as a private residential development, platted by the Audubon Park Realty Co. in 1912 around a country club, with housing rather than commerce as its purpose from the outset.
Community Life in Audubon Park
- The street plan is the best-known cultural signature: of the 20 streets, all but two carry the names of birds, keeping faith with the John James Audubon namesake. Housing runs to traditional designs, among them Neo-colonial, Dutch colonial and Neo-federal, with some Craftsman-style California bungalows mixed in.
