About Calvert City, Kentucky
History of Calvert City
- Calvert City was named for Potilla Willis Calvert. He built his home, Oak Hill, and roughly a decade later gave a portion of his land to a new railroad on the condition that a station be built near the house. That station became the starting point of the town.
- The city was incorporated on March 18, 1871.
Landmarks and Places in Calvert City
- Oak Hill, at 26 Aspen Street, is the historic home built by Potilla Calvert, founder of the city and the man it is named for. It was named a historic Kentucky landmark in August 1973 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 1974.
- Oak Hill's present appearance dates from 1949, when Victorian-era features were removed or hidden and a two-story four-column portico with a second-floor iron balcony and a Georgian style door frame were added. The house as it stands is therefore a mid-twentieth-century reworking of a nineteenth-century building.
- A Kentucky historical marker stands at 26 Aspen Street, the Oak Hill address.
The Calvert City Economy
- Calvert City has 16 industrial plants and calls them a key source of employment for Western Kentucky. The majority are chemical manufacturers, with some steel and metallurgical plants and industrial services firms among them.
- That concentration is a direct consequence of the Kentucky Dam: cheap TVA power in the 1940s drew the plants to the strip of land between the city and the Tennessee River.
- Calvert City is a hub for surface transportation. It is the northern terminus of the Julian M. Carroll Purchase Parkway, which links it toward Memphis, Tennessee.
Community Life in Calvert City
- The Lake News is the newspaper of record for Calvert City. A weekly founded in 1984 and owned and operated by Loyd W. Ford, it carries a circulation of 2,800 and is distributed across Marshall and Livingston counties.
- WCCK-FM at 95.7 is the radio station listed for the city.
- Calvert City has a lending library, a branch of the Marshall County Public Library.
